Once you start shopping for babies, you quickly realize that there are a million and one options out there. It can get to be overwhelming and, surprisingly, not all that much fun!
But we believe that shopping for babies should be satisfying. So we've pulled together our favorite newborn essentials - items that will be functional, but also bring Marie Kondo-style joy - so that you don't have to spend ages sifting through baby products for that perfect, just-right item.
Newborn clothing should obviously be adorable, but it also needs to be soft, comfortable, easy to put on and take off, convenient for diaper changes, and easy to clean.
Our Newborn Clothing Essentials include:
- Sleep Gowns
- Sleepers with Feet
For those first few weeks with your newborn, you'll be doing a lot of night time diaper changes and easy diaper access to avoid waking your sleepy babe is key. We love these Kid Wild sleep gowns for their tiny bit of stretch and comfortable kimono style for those healing belly buttons.
For daytime dressing when you still want your baby to be contained, sleepers with feet are perfect. You won't have to worry about socks falling off - they're contained all in one cozy piece!
We love Hanna Andersson's Little Sleepers. They're a nice weight 100% pima cotton interlock- so they're buttery soft with a little stretch👌 . These Sleepers stand up beautifully through many washes and (inevitable) stain removals.
For the cutest prints, ruffles, and colors in footed sleepers, SpearmintLOVE is perfect. These are super soft and lightweight, made from bamboo and a little rayon.
Noble has redesigned the waffle sleeper with the soft cotton waffle we remember from growing up. They spent a year sourcing the best materials like their 100% GOTS certified organic pima cotton. These organic jammies are dyed with plants like Indigo, Sandalwood, Henna, and Alkanet Root for the deepest and most unique colors.
Check out Kid Wild for ribbed organic cotton onesies in gender neutral options.
For unique prints, Milkbarn offers the most adorable seasonal collections made with organic cotton.
Rompers are basically onesies, but with a bit more leg coverage and are even cuter. Childhoods Rompers are made in the US (we love that) and are so comfy cute! (Those buttons!😍)
The reason Onesies (and rompers) are so great is because its easy to add or remove layers to make sure your baby is just the right temperature. And that brings us to Shorts and Leggings.
The absolute cutest baby shorts and leggings are from Childhoods Clothing.
Made with pre-washed French Terry, their pants are a cozy layering piece perfect for newborns and toddlers.
Depending on the weather when your baby is born, you may prefer bonnets or hats over one another. Protecting bare scalps from the sun and keeping babies warm are two important functions in addition to the obvious outfit-completion-factor.
Our favorite bonnets are from Briar - designed and handmade in the US (we also love that!), these bonnets are as beautiful as they are functional. Choose brimmed bonnets for a little more protection from the sun. They even make sherpa lined bonnets for the colder months!
If you're planning on visiting the beach or lounging by the pool with your newborn, you may want a Sunblock Swimmy from Hanna Andersson. These hats have a brim all the way around for great sun protection. They block 95% of UVA/UVB and are quick drying.
Our favorite Newborn Caps are also from Hanna Andersson. Their Beanies have a great fit, are thick 100% organic cotton Peruvian interlock.
Most babies are born with sharp nails that are surprisingly difficult to cut or file - and not only because you'll be terrified of injuring them. For those first few weeks, mitts can be very helpful to prevent scrapes and discomfort.
As useful as mitts can be, most of them just fall off of those tiny baby hands. That's why our pick for newborn mitts is the Goumi Mitts. They're designed to actually stay on - and they do! Plus they're made with a bamboo and cotton blend that's soft and naturally anti-microbial.
There is something about baby socks. Maybe because they're just so tiny - or maybe because you know they're covering up those perfect teeny baby toes 🤗. Beyond being adorable, socks are critical to keeping your newborn comfortable - especially when it's chilly.
Just like mitts, socks tend to just fall off of those teeny toes! Goumi Booties are perfect for that.
Our favorite basic socks are from Hanna Andersson. These are made from cotton terry with a bit of stretch. They're specially designed to stay on and have rubber traction dots on the feet.
Designing your perfect nursery requires much more specific and personalized details than we could ever cover in this post. So in this post, we'll focus on these luxury essentials for the nursery:
- Crib Mattress
- Crib Bedding
Babies spend quite a bit of time sleeping (hopefully) in their crib. That's why our favorite crib mattresses are organic, non-toxic, and breathable.
The Pebble Pure Crib Mattress is 100% organic and non-toxic. It's made from Coconut Coir, Natural Latex, and Organic Wool. Because of its breathability, baby's temperature is better regulated. It comes with a removable, washable cover that is made with eucalyptus and cotton fibers treated with zinc for microbe-resistance. It's also dipped in a Nano-sphere bath which makes it water resistant. In addition to feeling good about this mattress' materials and sustainability, visually it's beautiful!
Naturepedic's Organic Crib Mattresses are made with 100% USDA certified organic cotton. Because it's made without Latex, it's a great allergy friendly option.
Once you've selected a crib mattress, it's finally on to the fun part: crib bedding.
Petal and Branch Crib Sheets are handmade in New England with only 100% cotton. Cotton is not only natural, it's soft, durable, and easier to remove stains from than many other fibers. We curate our limited edition collections with our absolute favorite prints designed by artists in the US including Anna Bond from Rifle Paper Co., Alexia Marcelle Abegg, and Leah Duncan.

If you are looking for the most aesthetically beautiful bassinet, Plum + Sparrow is it. Their moses baskets are hand made, hand dyed, artisan baskets that are a beautiful spot to put your baby.
Rockers by Richard stands are the perfect spot to set your Plum + Sparrow moses basket. These are handmade in the US with solid hardwood.
However, if you are looking for a bassinet that will do the baby-soothing for you, the Snoo is the bassinet of your dreams.
This amazing sleeper claims to boost your baby's sleep with womb imitating rocking and white noise which automatically turns on and increases in response to your baby's cries. The Snoo claims to help babies learn to self soothe and sleep through the night. Which is really priority #1 once baby arrives.
While we're on the topic of sleep, a swaddle may soon be your new best friend. Our favorite swaddle is The Ollie Swaddle. It has a velcro closure to keep your baby's moro reflex at bay, but very importantly it ties at the bottom for easy middle of the night diaper changes without having to remove the swaddle.
If your baby prefers to have their arms up or you are starting to transition your baby out of being swaddled - which is very important when they start rolling over - the Love to Dream Swaddle is perfect. With arms up, this swaddle also allows enough movement for baby to self soothe while still preventing the moro reflex. This swaddle also has a two way zipper for easy middle of the night diaper changes.
